A Zoom cloud recording already lives in your Zoom account. Getting a transcript from it is either (a) Zoom's own audio transcript feature, or (b) download the MP4/M4A and run it through a dedicated tool. Both work. They are not equal if you need speaker cleanup or SRT.
This is the 2026 cloud-recording path only. For a bot-free live workflow overview, see how to transcribe a Zoom meeting without a bot. Intent page: transcribe Zoom meetings.
What you need first
- A Zoom plan that allows cloud recording (typically paid plans; confirm your account)
- Host or admin access to the recording
- Either Zoom audio transcript enabled, or permission to download the media file
Local recordings saved only to a laptop are a different folder path. This post is about zoom.us → Recordings cloud files.
Option A: Use Zoom's built-in cloud transcript
Zoom can generate an audio transcript for cloud recordings when the feature is enabled for your account.
Enable (account admin)
- Sign in at zoom.us.
- Go to Settings → Recording (admin paths vary slightly by plan).
- Enable Cloud recording.
- Enable Create audio transcript (wording may say audio transcript / transcription).
- Save.
After the meeting
- Host the meeting and Record to the Cloud.
- Wait for Zoom to finish processing. You often get an email when the recording is ready.
- Open Recordings in the Zoom web portal.
- Open the meeting. Download or open the audio transcript (often VTT-style) if Zoom produced one.
- Edit typos in Zoom's transcript editor if your plan allows it.
Honest limits: Zoom's transcript is convenient. Accuracy depends on audio quality. Export and editing are thinner than a dedicated transcript workspace. Speaker labels and SRT polish are why many people still download the MP4.
Option B: Download the cloud file and upload (recommended for SRT)
When you need a cleaner edit, captions, or Zoom did not produce a usable transcript, use the media file.
- Zoom web → Recordings.
- Find the meeting.
- Download the MP4 (video) or M4A (audio-only), whichever your host settings created.
- Open File Transcribe.
- Upload the file from the homepage (guest try works for a first pass).
- Wait for segments. Rename speakers. Fix names and jargon.
- Export TXT / DOCX / PDF for notes, or SRT / VTT for video.

Cloud recording checklist (before you hit Record)
- Cloud recording is on for the host
- Participants know you are recording
- Prefer a quiet room and headset mics (garbage audio becomes garbage text)
- If you need Zoom's native transcript, confirm Create audio transcript is enabled before the call

Common problems
"I do not see a transcript in Recordings"
Audio transcript may be disabled, still processing, or unavailable on your plan. Download the MP4 and upload elsewhere instead of waiting on Zoom's feature matrix.
"I only have audio, no video"
That is fine. Upload the M4A. File Transcribe does not need the video track for a text transcript.
"The host will not share the file"
Ask for cloud recording access or a shared download link. Without the media (or Zoom's own transcript), there is nothing to convert.
"I wanted a live bot, not a cloud file"
Different product. See Otter alternatives for meeting notes. Cloud recording + upload stays bot-free.
FAQ
How long does Zoom take to create a cloud transcript?
Usually minutes to a bit longer for long meetings. Processing time varies. If it never appears, fall back to downloading the recording.
Can I get SRT from Zoom's native transcript?
Zoom often gives VTT-style output. For a caption workflow you control, download the MP4 and export SRT from File Transcribe after a quick edit pass.
Does this work for webinars?
Yes if the webinar was recorded to the cloud and you can access the recording. Same download → upload path.
Is cloud recording required?
For this specific guide, yes. Local recording is still uploadable; you just grab the file from your computer instead of the Zoom portal.
Do this next
- Open your last cloud recording in Zoom.
- Download the MP4 or M4A.
- Upload it on the File Transcribe homepage.
- Export the format you actually need.
