Download the audio-only M4A from a Zoom cloud recording when you need the sound for transcription and you do not need the video.

Download Zoom audio for transcription when the cloud recording has a separate audio-only file and you do not need the video. That file is usually an M4A. It is smaller than the MP4, it still has everyone's mixed audio, and it is the right upload when the job is a transcript rather than a captioned picture.
This page is the download itself. It is not the guide to Zoom's built-in transcript, and it is not the argument about meeting bots. Those are how to get a transcript from a Zoom cloud recording and how to transcribe a Zoom meeting without a bot. If the MP4 is on the host's computer instead of zoom.us, use how to transcribe a Zoom local recording. If you are choosing between Zoom's own transcript and uploading video, use Zoom cloud transcript vs uploading the MP4.
What you are downloading
On a Zoom cloud recording page, the meeting is often split into more than one file:
Audio only (M4A)
- What it is
- Mixed meeting audio, no picture
- Upload it when
- You want a transcript or notes
MP4 (speaker view, gallery, or shared screen)
- What it is
- Video plus the same kind of audio
- Upload it when
- You also need captions timed to picture
Chat
- What it is
- Typed chat, not speech
- Upload it when
- You want the side conversation, not the voices
Audio transcript
- What it is
- Zoom's own text or VTT, if it was turned on
- Upload it when
- You already decided Zoom's transcript is enough
Grab Audio only. Leave the video on Zoom unless you need it.
You need a host account, or a recording someone shared with you. Cloud recordings are processed after the meeting. If the row still says processing, the M4A is not ready. Zoom's cloud library is not permanent storage. Plans differ on how long a recording stays. Download while the file is still listed. Confirm retention in your Zoom account. Sign in at zoom.us.
Download the audio-only M4A
- Open zoom.us and sign in as the host, or open the share link the host sent you. A share link may ask for a passcode. That page is enough. You do not need the full Recordings library if you only have the link.
- If you are in the account, open Recordings in the side navigation. The list is the cloud library, not the folder on your laptop.
- Find the meeting by topic or date. Search helps when the account records every standup.
- Click the meeting topic. Wait if Zoom still shows the recording as processing. Refresh later instead of downloading a partial file.
- On the recording detail page, find the row labeled Audio only. The type is M4A.
- Click Download on that row. Do not use the video row (shared screen, gallery view, or active speaker) unless you also want picture.
- Save the M4A somewhere you will find it. The name often includes `audio_only` or the meeting topic. Keep the `.m4a` extension.
There is sometimes a control to download every file from the meeting. Skip that if all you need is speech. A zip of three camera views wastes time and disk.
Labels move a little by account and by Zoom's layout. If you cannot see the word Audio, look for an M4A in the file list. An MP4 is the video. A VTT labeled as a transcript is Zoom's text, which is a different product from the audio.
If Audio only is missing
Some meetings only offer the MP4. The host's cloud recording settings did not keep a separate audio file, or this meeting was recorded in a mode that stored video only.
For this meeting, download the MP4 and treat the audio inside it as the source. File Transcribe can take the video file. It is a larger upload, and you still get a transcript. For the next meeting, the host can check Settings, then Recording, on zoom.us, and confirm cloud recording is set to keep an audio file. Exact toggle names vary. Confirm them in the admin's Zoom settings rather than guessing from an old screenshot.
Do not convert the MP4 to a mystery format in a random website just to "get audio." Upload the M4A if you have it, or the MP4 if you do not.
A local recording never appears on this page. If the host recorded to the computer, the cloud library can be empty even though a perfect MP4 exists on their disk. Send them to the local recording guide.
Upload the M4A
- Open File Transcribe or transcribe Zoom meetings.
- Upload the M4A. Guest try on the homepage works for a first pass. The free plan is 50 minutes a month. Longer meetings need Pro, about $19/mo and about 2,000 minutes, or Plus, about $49/mo and about 5,000 minutes. Minutes refresh monthly. See /pricing.
- Set the language, or leave auto-detect if the meeting stayed in one language.
- Turn speakers on when more than one person talked.
- When segments are in, rename people. Zoom's M4A does not carry a neat speaker list into the transcript. "Speaker 1" becomes the host only after you say so.
- Export TXT, DOCX, or PDF for notes. Export SRT or VTT if a video of the same meeting will be published. Time captions to the video you publish, not to a different edit.
There is no bot in this path. You are transcribing a file you already downloaded.
The M4A is the right source for notes, a searchable recap, and quote checks. If the deliverable is YouTube captions, you still need the picture's timeline to match. Many people download the M4A for the transcript and only pull the MP4 when they are ready to caption. The decision between Zoom's VTT and uploading the video is Zoom cloud transcript vs uploading the MP4.
Checks before you close the laptop
- Play two seconds of the M4A. You should hear the meeting, not silence or a single notification ding.
- Duration should be close to the meeting length. A 4 minute file from a 50 minute call means you grabbed a clip, a highlight, or a broken download.
- If several audio rows exist, prefer the mixed Audio only file. Separate participant tracks, when a host turned them on, are easy to transcribe one voice at a time and then lose the other half of the conversation.
Format notes for this container live on M4A to text. You do not need to convert to MP3 first.
FAQ
How do I download Zoom audio for transcription?
Sign in at zoom.us, open Recordings, open the meeting, and download Audio only (M4A). Upload that file. Leave the MP4 unless you need video.
Is Zoom audio M4A or MP3?
Cloud audio-only files are M4A. Upload the M4A directly. Renaming it to `.mp3` does not convert it.
What if the recording page only shows an MP4?
Download the MP4 for this meeting and upload that. Ask the host to confirm a separate audio file is enabled for the next cloud recording.
Can I transcribe Zoom audio without the video?
Yes. Speech is in the M4A. Video matters later, when you need SRT timed to a published picture.
Is the audio download the same as Zoom's transcript?
No. Audio only is the recording. The audio transcript row, when it exists, is text Zoom already generated. This guide stops at the M4A so you can run your own transcript.
Save the M4A, then upload it
Download Audio only from the cloud recording page, confirm the duration by playing the start, and upload the M4A on the homepage. Rename speakers before you export. If the file you actually have is an MP4 in a Zoom folder on the host PC, that is the local recording path, not this one.
