Is tl;dv worth it in 2026? Yes for clip-first meeting recaps. Weak as a transcript library or a subtitle library.

tl;dv is worth it for clip-first meeting recaps. It is weak as a transcript library, and weaker as a subtitle library. Pay if your team will watch a 30-second moment. Do not pay if the archive you need is full text or SRT files.
The longer product review, with standups, sales, and plan shape, is the tl;dv review (2026). This page is the decision only. Same-day context if you also need live bilingual notes or a file tool: Notta vs tl;dv vs File Transcribe and is Notta worth it?.

Is tl;dv worth it?
| You need | Worth paying? |
|---|---|
| A clip of the objection, the blocker, or the decision | Yes |
| A recap people open because it is short | Yes |
| A searchable library of full transcripts you will edit | No |
| SRT or VTT for published video | No |
| Notes from a file tl;dv never joined | No |
| CRM logging on every sales call | No. That is a different product. |
Worth it for clip-first meeting recaps
tl;dv matches a specific habit. Someone records the Zoom or Google Meet. Instead of asking the team to read 40 minutes of text, they send a timestamped clip: the pricing pushback, the bug repro, the decision at minute 22. If that is how your Slack actually works, the subscription is pointed at a real behavior.
Pay when:
- Recaps die if they are long, and clips get watched
- Zoom and Meet are where the meetings already happen
- A recorder on internal calls is fine
- You want a lighter tool than a full CRM conversation suite
The free plan is how people test the habit. Paid tiers are for more recordings, search, and team use. Do not model a company archive on the free caps. Read the current pricing page and ask one question: in the last month, did anyone open a clip, or did they only ask for the transcript?
File Transcribe will not cut a shareable meeting clip or join the call. If the winning output is the clip link, tl;dv wins that job. Credit it there. File Transcribe starts later, when you already have media and need text or captions.
Weak as a transcript or subtitle library
A transcript library is a place you return to for quotes, speaker names, and search across months of full text. A subtitle library is a stack of SRT or VTT files tied to videos you publish or edit. tl;dv is not built as either shelf. The meeting note and the clip are the point. Full text is supporting material. Caption files are a detour.
Use something else when:
- You are proofing an interview line by line
- You need speaker labels you trust in a DOCX
- The video needs SRT for YouTube or a course
- The source is an MP4, M4A, or WAV you already downloaded
- The meeting never had tl;dv in it
Upload that recording on File Transcribe. Guest try from the homepage. Segment editor, speaker labels, SRT and VTT. Free is 50 minutes a month. Pro is about $19/mo for about 2,000 minutes. Plus is about $49/mo for about 5,000 minutes. Credits refresh each month. No bot, no public API, no clip feed.
Zoom files you record yourself: transcribe Zoom meetings. If the written follow-up still matters after the clip, turn the transcript into owners and dates: how to turn meeting transcripts into action items.
A Tuesday where the clip is the whole recap
Picture a 45-minute product sync. The useful part is three minutes where someone shows a broken checkout. tl;dv is worth it if the note in Slack is that clip, with a one-line caption, and people reply on the clip. It is not worth it if the same sync must become a speaker-labeled transcript, a DOCX for the spec, and an SRT because the repro will be published. Those are library jobs. Clip-first means the clip is the artifact people keep.
Same test on a sales call. A 20-second objection clip is a fair coaching note for an internal standup. It is a bad system of record if finance wants the full wording of the discount, or if marketing wants captions on the customer story cut from that call. Keep tl;dv for the clip. Move the MP4 to a transcript tool when the words themselves have to travel.
Pay only if the clips get opened
tl;dv feels worth it in week one because clipping is fast. It stops being worth it when the library is a pile of meetings nobody clips and nobody rereads. You are then paying for a recorder and using none of the behavior the product is good at.
Skip the upgrade if:
- Your recap is a Google Doc the team already maintains
- You needed subtitles and hoped the meeting tool would export them
- External buyers hate the recorder and you are bending calls to fit it
- You wanted CRM logging on every demo and bought a clip tool instead
Bilingual live notes are a different purchase. If that is the gap, read is Notta worth it?, not another tl;dv tier.
Keep the clip, then caption the file
You can stay on tl;dv for internal recaps and still caption one recording. Download the meeting video you are allowed to reuse, or use the Zoom cloud MP4, and upload it to File Transcribe for SRT. The clip link can stay in Slack. The subtitle file lives with the published video.
Minute caps for that file work: pricing. Shared notes, if clips are not your culture at all: File Transcribe vs Otter.
FAQ
Is tl;dv worth it for a solo founder?
Yes if you send clips instead of rewatching calls. No if you only wanted a transcript folder or captions for content. Try the free plan long enough to see whether you actually share clips.
Is tl;dv worth it as a transcript library?
No. Search may exist on paid tiers, but the product is clip-first. A library of edited transcripts is a different job.
Is tl;dv worth it for subtitles?
No. Take the recording and export SRT or VTT from a file tool. File Transcribe does that after upload.
tl;dv or Notta?
tl;dv when the recap is a clip. Notta when live bilingual notes are the job. Comparison: Notta vs tl;dv vs File Transcribe.
What if the meeting is already an MP4?
Skip the recorder. Upload the file. Guest try is on the homepage. Plans are on pricing.
