Read AI alternatives come up when the Read Assistant is in the participant list and you did not want a score. You wanted text. Read is built to join Zoom, Google Meet, and Teams, then write a meeting report. That is a different product from voice to text on a file you already have.

This list is for the file, the no-bot note, and the lighter meeting recap. It is not another "best transcription software for startups" page. Prices below were checked against Read's public plans in early November 2026. Confirm on Read's pricing and on each other site before you buy.

A voice note is not a meeting report. If the audio is a Telegram message, the path is Telegram voice messages, then a transcript. Read will not be in that chat.

Quick picks

ToolBest for
File TranscribeThe recording is already an MP3, M4A, or MP4. No bot. SRT/VTT on paid plans.
GranolaYou attend the meeting, take rough notes, and want them cleaned up without a bot in the room
FathomA lighter live recap when a bot is acceptable
OtterShared live notes for a team that already expects a notetaker
FellowAgendas and notes are the system, and transcription is one piece

Read, so the comparison is fair. Read's help center lists Free at 5 meeting reports a month, up to 1 hour each. Pro is listed at $19.75 monthly or $15 per user billed annually, with unlimited reports and about 100 minutes of uploads. Audio and video playback sits on Enterprise, listed higher. The assistant joins by default. A desktop record mode exists and, per Read's own desktop notes, drops video, coaching, and participant metrics. Confirm before you budget.

1. File Transcribe: best Read alternative when the audio is a file

File Transcribe does not join the meeting and does not write a talk-share score. You upload the Zoom cloud MP4, the local recording, or the voice memo. Guests can try a file without an account. After sign-in you edit speaker-labeled segments and export.

Read meters the product in meeting reports. Uploads on Pro are a small bucket next to unlimited reports. If your week is three long interviews and a lecture, that meter is the wrong one. File Transcribe uses monthly audio minutes: Free is about 50 minutes, TXT or PDF. Pro is about $19/month for about 2,000 minutes, with SRT and VTT. Plus is about $49/month for about 5,000 minutes. Confirm on /pricing.

Pick File Transcribe if the call is over and the file exists. Stay on Read if you want the assistant on the calendar and the report after every internal meeting.

Sibling pages if the search started next door: Otter.ai alternatives and is Read AI worth it.

2. Granola: best when you want notes and no participant named Read

Granola is a notepad. It captures device audio, mixes that with the notes you typed, and does not send a bot into the call. Granola's pricing page lists Basic at $0 with about 30 days of note history, and Business at $14 per user per month. Their docs say meeting audio is deleted after transcription. Confirm on Granola pricing.

Strengths: You were in the meeting. The note is yours to edit. Clients do not see an extra tile.

Tradeoffs: It is not a caption pipeline. History on the free plan stops at the recent window. You have to be at the machine that is capturing. A file a client emailed you yesterday is the wrong start.

Pick Granola if the job is enhanced notes from a meeting you attended. Pick File Transcribe if you need the transcript file or SRT from a recording you were handed. The notes-shaped list is Granola alternatives for meeting notes.

3. Fathom: best lighter bot when the report is too much

Fathom records Zoom, Meet, and Teams and writes a recap. Many people land here after Read because they wanted notes, not a coaching score and a participant chart. Fathom's free tier for individuals is the usual reason it shows up on these lists. Confirm the current caps.

Strengths: Fast recap, less theater than a full meeting-intelligence suite.

Tradeoffs: A bot is still a bot. It will not turn a 90-minute WAV into an SRT for YouTube.

Pick Fathom if live notes are the job and Read feels heavy. Pick File Transcribe if you already have the file. See File Transcribe vs Fathom.

4. Otter: best when the team wants a shared live transcript

Otter is the older version of this category: a notetaker in the meeting, a library after. It wins when the team already shares Otter notes and the buyer expects that tile. It loses for the same reason people leave Read: the recording was already on disk, and a seat does not help last Tuesday's file.

Review: Otter.ai review. Product page: /compare/otter.

5. Fellow: best when the alternative is a meeting system, not a transcript box

Fellow is agendas, templates, and notes, with recording as bot or desktop audio. People who search Read alternatives sometimes want that structure. People who only wanted the words do not.

Fellow's pricing page lists a free plan with a small lifetime note allowance, then Team around $7 per user per month on annual billing. Confirm on Fellow pricing. The meeting-notes cut is Fellow alternatives.

Pick Fellow if the team will actually use agendas. Skip it if you needed voice to text on a file tonight.

What not to buy

Do not replace Read with another score-and-report bot and call it a voice-to-text tool. If the failure was "the assistant showed up on a client call," the fix is a product that does not join. If the failure was "I have 40 hours of MP3s," the fix is upload minutes, not unlimited meeting reports.

Telegram voice messages, phone memos, and Reels are files. Read's calendar join will not see them. Start at Telegram voice messages or the homepage.

FAQ

What is the best Read AI alternative for voice to text?

If the audio is already a file, File Transcribe. If you want notes from a meeting you are in, without a bot, Granola. If a lighter bot is fine, Fathom. Read still fits internal meetings where the report is the point.

Does Read AI transcribe uploaded files?

Paid plans include a limited upload allowance, listed around 100 minutes a month on Pro. Meeting reports are the main meter. Confirm on Read's pricing page. A workload of long files will hit that cap first.

Is there a Read AI alternative without a bot?

Yes. Granola captures on the device. File Transcribe never joins. You record with Zoom, Meet, or your phone, then upload. Read's desktop app can also record without the assistant, with fewer report features than the bot path. Confirm the current desktop limits in Read's help center.

Is Read AI free?

There is a free plan, listed at 5 meeting reports a month. That is enough to see the product. It is not a plan for a full calendar.

If the next hour of audio is a file, upload it on the homepage. If the next hour is an internal meeting and you want Read's report, stay. The buy-or-skip version is is Read AI worth it.
