Turning a transcript into a voiceover script means you rewrite what was said into what should be read. The transcript is a record. The script is a performance.
People skip that and hand a talent, or their own future self, a raw dump: greetings, false starts, a sidebar about the slide, then the one sentence that belonged in the video. The read sounds like a meeting because it is a meeting. A script is shorter, spoken in breaths, and still pointed at the minute in the source so an editor can find the original take.
File Transcribe is how you get the record from a file you already have. Upload in the browser on the homepage. It is not a teleprompter and not a Windows desktop install. Guest try covers a first file with no signup. Free is about 50 minutes a month. Pro is about $19 a month for about 2,000 minutes. Confirm on pricing.
Filler words are a separate pass. Do that in how to clean filler words before a voiceover, not by scrubbing every "um" while you are still choosing which lines survive.
Direct answer
- Upload the recording and keep the timestamps.
- Highlight only the lines a viewer should hear.
- Cut the preamble: hellos, "can you see my screen," late arrivals.
- Rewrite those lines into sentences a person can say in one breath.
- Mark pauses. Leave the timestamp next to each block so the edit can find the source.
- Run the filler pass after the script has a shape, using the sibling guide.
If this meeting also needs notes for people who will not watch, that is meeting minutes. Minutes and a voiceover are two documents. Do not make the talent read the attendance list.
A transcript and a script are different objects
A transcript answers "what happened on the tape." It keeps the wobble, the repeated price, the joke that died. That is the right object for QA, research, and a dispute about what was promised.
A voiceover script answers "what should the next listener hear." It can drop a whole minute and split one breathless sentence into two. It should not invent a claim the speaker never made. You are cutting and smoothing, not writing a new offer in their mouth.
Read this aloud before you book the booth. If you run out of air, the sentence is still a transcript sentence.
| At 04:12 in the transcript | In the script |
|---|---|
| "Okay so, um, welcome, can everyone see the screen, cool, so the thing I want them to hear is you get the template the same day, you know, if you book before Friday." | "Book before Friday and you get the template the same day." Timestamp: 04:12. |
The timestamp stays so picture can be found later.
Cut the preamble before you polish a sentence
Meeting recordings and loose demos open with weather, audio checks, and a recap of why the call exists. None of that is the video. Select from the first line that would make sense if a stranger hit play.
Cut the audio check, the "is it just us," the slide tour that repeats the hook, and the goodbye. Keep a preamble line only when it is the point: a blooper, a documentary beat, a founder story that starts with the awkward hello. A product demo's hello is clutter.
If the source was an Instagram Reel, the "preamble" is often a hook plus a ramble that repeats the hook. The script might be one or two sentences, not the full caption dump. Transcribe the Reel from the file you downloaded, then cut. The format page is Instagram Reels.
Rewrite for the mouth
Spoken drafts nest clauses until the period is a rumor. Break them.
Put one idea in a sentence. Prefer the words the speaker already used when they were clear. Replace a clause with a period, not with a fancier verb. Numbers should look the way they will be said: "twenty percent" or "20 percent," pick one and read it. Names get a pronunciation note in brackets if a stranger will say them: `[pronounced AHN-drey]`.
Mark a pause where the picture needs a beat, or where the talent should not rush the next claim. A blank line or the word `[pause]` is enough. You are not timing frames in this pass. You are stopping the read from becoming one long exhale.
Example of a breath problem:
"If you have already tried resetting it and it is still happening after you reinstall, which a lot of people do twice, then the next step is the log file on the desktop."
Script:
"Already reinstalled it, and it is still broken?
[pause]
The next step is the log file on the desktop."
Same facts. Put `12:40` above the block so the editor can grab the original screen if the demo showed that log file.
Keep the timestamp even after you delete the sentence around it
The script will not stay in lockstep with the recording. That is fine. Each kept block still needs a pointer:
`06:18` Book before Friday and you get the template the same day.
`06:31` The code is in the email, not in the app.
When someone later asks whether you promised same-day delivery, you click 06:18. You do not scrub a twenty-minute master. Keep that source time in the margin even if a teleprompter shows a fresh clock.
Leave fillers for the other pass
You will see um, uh, and abandoned starts while you cut. Leave them until the lines you are keeping are chosen. "I, um, quit" is not the same read as "I quit," and that choice has its own pass: how to clean filler words before a voiceover.
Profanity, classroom cuts, and a general publishing cleanup are a wider job. That lives in enhancing transcriptions by removing filler words and profanity. Use it when the transcript is becoming an article or a public page, not when someone is about to record this script.
FAQ
How do I turn a transcript into a voiceover script?
Keep the timestamps, delete the meeting preamble, rewrite the surviving lines into short spoken sentences, mark pauses, and only then clean fillers that make the read stumble.
Can I just record the raw transcript?
You can. It will sound like the meeting. A script is the cut you wished they had said, still tied to what they did say.
What if I also need meeting notes?
Write the notes with meeting minutes. Write the read as a separate, shorter document. The talent should not perform the action-item list unless that list is the video.
The source is a Reel. How short is the script?
Often a hook and one proof line. Transcribe the file via Instagram Reels, then keep only what fits the next read.
Upload the source recording on the homepage. When the text is back, build the script from the timestamps, and run the filler pass once the lines are chosen.
