Upload the WebM from Chrome, OBS, or a browser recorder, and remux to MP4 only after the upload fails.

Transcribing a WebM recording means you upload the file Chrome, OBS, or a browser recorder already saved. You do not remux it to MP4 while the audio track is intact.
WebM is the default container for a lot of capture that never touched a camera. A tab recording, a quick screen grab, a Loom-style browser tool, an OBS profile someone set to WebM so a crash would not corrupt the whole take: the speech is inside that file. Wrapping it as MP4 makes a second file. It does not repair a quiet mic or a capture that recorded the wrong device.
File Transcribe takes WebM in the browser, along with other common audio and video such as MP3, WAV, and FLAC. There is no desktop install and it does not run offline. Guest try covers a first file with no signup. Free is about 50 minutes a month. Pro is about $19 a month for about 2,000 minutes. Confirm on pricing.
The page for this container is WebM to text. If you already exported MP4 on purpose, use MP4 to text.
Direct answer
- Find the `.webm` in Downloads, the OBS folder, or the recorder's export path.
- Play it. Confirm the voice you care about is actually on the track.
- Upload that WebM. Skip the remux.
- Remux to MP4 only if the upload rejects the file. See when to convert to MP3 before you transcribe for the same rule on audio-only copies.
- Fix the lines you will quote. A format change will not rewrite a bad capture.
Where the WebM on a Windows PC usually came from
Chrome's tab capture and a lot of "record this tab" extensions write WebM. OBS will too, if Output mode is set that way. Some in-browser meeting recorders and screenshot tools do the same because WebM can finalize a file even when the tab closes early.
The filename is often useless: `video.webm` or a hash. Play the start, then rename it once you know what it is, for example `2026-10-29_demo-walkthrough.webm`.
A Zoom or Teams cloud download is usually MP4. Upload that on MP4 to text. Leave a good WebM as WebM.
Upload the WebM you have
Open WebM to text or the homepage in Edge or Chrome. Drag the file from File Explorer onto the page. If the file picker does not list `.webm`, drag still works better than a remux. You are not installing a codec pack to get a transcript.
Turn speaker labels on when two people are on the track. A solo screen demo with one narrator can leave them off. Click a timestamp and listen before you paste a sentence into a doc. Browser audio is full of "let me share" and notification chirps. The text will include them until you delete the ones you do not want.
Export TXT for notes. Sign in if you need SRT or VTT for the same recording. Guest try is the first file, not a place to park every capture from the quarter.
A screen recording with a quiet mic
This is the WebM that looks fine and reads badly. The screen recorder grabbed system audio at a healthy level: the product video, the click sounds, a hold loop. The narrator is a laptop mic six feet from the person, or a headset mic with the gain left down. The transcript clings to the loud track. You get UI words from the video on screen and a fog where the explanation was.
Listen for ten seconds. If you have to strain, the model will too. Upload when the voice is still audible, then correct the soft lines from the timestamps. Words from a louder YouTube tab or a demo video will land in the text too. Delete them if they are not yours. OBS cannot be unmixed after it already blended the tracks.
The next take is where you move the mic closer, or raise the mic and lower desktop audio. Remuxing this file to MP4 copies the same mix. It does not turn the quiet mic up.
A tab recording that captured the wrong device
Chrome will happily record a tab and attach whatever input Windows had selected. Sometimes that is the right headset. Sometimes it is a monitor with no microphone, "Stereo Mix," or a muted input that still produces a file of the right duration. OBS does the same when the scene's audio device is the camera you forgot to turn off, or desktop audio only.
You will know after a listen: the transcript is empty, you hear keyboard and some other video, or the words belong to a different meeting than the one on screen. Scrub to a minute where someone is clearly talking. If that minute is silent, the speech was never captured. A convert-to-MP4 step on a silent track will not invent it.
On the next recording, the input named in the recorder should be the headset you were wearing. This file is already baked.
If the right audio exists as a separate WAV or FLAC from a second recorder, transcribe that file. How to transcribe a FLAC file covers the lossless one. The WebM can stay as the picture if you later need to line captions up by ear.
Remux only after the upload fails
Try the WebM once. If the page takes it, you are done with containers.
If the upload errors, make a copy the tool can accept. MP4 is the usual video copy. An audio-only MP3 is enough when you do not need the picture. Keep the WebM until the text looks right. A hasty OBS convert can keep the desktop track and drop the mic. The track that matters is the one with the voice on it.
FAQ
How do I transcribe a WebM recording?
Drag the `.webm` onto WebM to text. Listen first so you know the mic is on the file. Edit from the timestamps.
Do I need to convert WebM to MP4 first?
No, if the upload accepts the file. Convert after a failed upload, and keep the WebM until you have checked the text.
Why is my screen recording transcript mostly the video on screen?
Desktop audio was louder than the narrator. The mix favors the loud track. Raise the mic and lower system audio on the next take. This file has to be edited by ear.
The WebM has no speech. What now?
The recorder saved the wrong device or a muted input. Find another recording of that conversation if one exists. A new container will not add the missing voice.
Upload the capture on WebM to text. If the download you actually have is MP4, use MP4 to text and start from the homepage when you are already in the editor flow.
