Transcribing a Skype call recording means uploading an MP4 or M4A you already saved from before consumer Skype shut down. Consumer Skype shut down on 5 May 2025. You cannot open Skype and start a new recording in 2026. This page will not pretend otherwise.

If the call you remember was really Microsoft Teams, or the file now lives in Teams, OneDrive, or SharePoint, stop here and use Microsoft Teams. The Teams-specific ranking is best Teams recording transcription. File Transcribe does not join Skype, and it does not join Teams. It transcribes a file you can already download.

Old Skype files upload on Skype calls. A phone-style recording with road noise or one muffled side belongs with phone call recording to text.

Direct answer

  1. Find the file on a disk, in email, or in a drive folder you saved before 5 May 2025. Do not look for a Record button in Skype.
  2. If it is an MP4, M4A, or MP3 from an old Skype recording, upload that file.
  3. If the "Skype" recording is actually a Teams file, download it from Teams and follow the Teams path.
  4. If you cannot download anything, stop. A transcript tool cannot recover a recording that only lived inside the shut-down app.
  5. Turn speaker labels on. Rename the two people.
  6. Mark the sentence you kept the recording for. Export the text.

Step 1: Sort the file before you upload

"Skype recording" means two different things in 2026, and only one of them is Skype.

An old Skype file. The consumer app let some people record calls, and other people captured the call with a separate recorder. What you still have is a normal media file: often MP4, sometimes M4A or MP3, sitting in Videos, Downloads, an old Skype folder, or a cloud drive you copied it to. The extension matters more than the logo you remember.

A Teams file people still call Skype. Microsoft pointed consumer Skype users at Teams. Chats and contacts moved for many accounts. A recording made after the move, or a file that now opens from a Teams chat, is a Teams recording even if everyone in the email thread says "the Skype call." Treat the storage location as the fact. OneDrive, SharePoint, Stream, or a Teams chat link means Teams.

Skype for Business is a different product from the consumer app that shut down. If your company still says Skype and the recording is in Teams or OneDrive, it is still a Teams file for this job. Do not hunt for a 2019 Skype window.

Step 2: Upload an old Skype MP4 or M4A

You only do this step when the file is already on your machine or in a drive you can download from.

  1. Confirm the name ends in `.mp4`, `.m4a`, or `.mp3`. If it is a Teams link, go to step 3 instead.
  2. Play ten seconds. If you hear the call, you have the right file. If you hear nothing, you have a broken export, not a transcription problem.
  3. Rename it so you can find it later: `2024-11-02_client-call_skype.mp4`. Use the date of the call, not today's date.
  4. Upload it on Skype call transcription.
  5. Enable speaker labels.

Guest try works for a single file. Free is about 50 minutes a month. Pro is about $19 a month for about 2,000 minutes. Confirm on pricing.

Old Skype audio is often a laptop mic, a headset on one side, and a phone on the other. Speaker labels will struggle when both people are mashed into one channel. That was true on the day of the call. Uploading twice does not split the track. Listen to the overlap and type the name.

Step 3: If it is Teams, leave this page

A Teams recording usually shows up from the meeting chat, then OneDrive or SharePoint. Download the MP4 from there. The walkthrough for that download, and what to do when the tenant hides the file, is best Teams recording transcription. Upload the downloaded MP4 on Microsoft Teams.

Do not run a Teams MP4 through a "Skype converter" first. It is already a video file. Extra conversion is how people lose the audio track.

If someone says the Skype recording "should be in Teams now" and you cannot find a file, ask the person who started the recording. Migration of chats is not the same thing as a recording you can still download. If there is no file, there is nothing to upload.

Step 4: Mark the line you needed the recording for

People dig up a 2023 Skype file for one reason: a sentence. Find that sentence. Click the timestamp and listen before you quote it.

What you checkWhy
Who spokeOld files often have no names, only two voices
The sentence you came forCopy it after you have heard it, not from the first draft
The timestampSo the next person can hear it without scrubbing

Fix names and the odd product word. Leave the rest unless you are publishing the text. A private call from years ago does not need a public caption file. If you do need SRT later, export it after you are signed in, from the same transcript.

What this will not do

  • It will not start a Skype call, record one, or reopen consumer Skype. That app shut down on 5 May 2025.
  • It will not pull a recording out of an account you can no longer sign in to. If the only copy died with the app, it is gone.
  • It will not join Teams or search your OneDrive for you.
  • It will not invent the missing half of a one-sided phone capture. Habits for that audio are on phone call recording to text.

FAQ

How do I transcribe a Skype call recording in 2026?

If you still have the MP4, M4A, or MP3 from an old Skype recording, upload it on Skype calls. If the file is a Teams recording, use Microsoft Teams instead. Do not try to record a new Skype call.

Can I still record a Skype call?

Not in consumer Skype. That app shut down on 5 May 2025. A new call you record now is some other app, usually Teams. Transcribe the file that app actually saved.

Download the file first. A transcript needs audio. If the link opens Teams, follow the Teams download. If the link opens nothing, the recording is not available to upload.

Will speaker names from old Skype show up automatically?

Usually no. The file is just audio or video. Turn speaker labels on, listen to a few seconds, and type the two names yourself.

Upload the old file on Skype call transcription. If it is a Teams MP4, upload that on Microsoft Teams instead. Either way you are uploading a recording you already have, from the homepage if you are not sure which page fits the extension.
