Best transcription for broadcast and news in 2026. Recorded packages and archive search, with a hard line around live TV captioning.

Best transcription for broadcast and news depends on which desk you mean. A digital producer with an interview file is not a live TV captioner. A station archive is not a podcast show-notes tool. This guide splits those jobs so you do not buy a meeting bot for a newsroom that lives on files.
Press events, specifically: best AI tools for press conference transcripts. Reporter interviews: best transcription tools for journalists.
Late-2026 prices move. Confirm on vendor sites. Nothing here is a claim about FCC compliance.

If your job is the last row, stop reading tool roundups and talk to the person who signs the caption contract. US closed captioning rules for television are an FCC topic, not an AI-app topic. Consumer overview: FCC closed captioning guide.
1. File Transcribe for recorded news files
File Transcribe is the default when the story starts as a file: interview WAV, phone M4A, Zoom export, or a package MP4. Upload it, label speakers, export text for the script or SRT/VTT if the digital cut needs captions.
Pick it if producers and reporters self-edit. Skip it if you need live captions on a broadcast chain, word-level integration with a newsroom computer system, or a vendor who indemnifies caption errors.
Guest try: homepage. Pro is $19/mo and includes SRT/VTT. See /pricing.
Verify before you air a quote: how journalists verify AI transcripts.
2. Human caption vendors for anything that airs as captions
Verbit, caption agencies, and Rev's human line exist because broadcast and government video often require a person and a delivery format (live, same-day, or next-day). AI drafts can feed that desk. They do not replace the desk when the contract says a human captioner.
Verbit context, without pretending File Transcribe is an enterprise caption network: Verbit review · compare Verbit.
3. Otter or Teams for editorial meetings only
Morning meetings and planning calls are not the show. If the newsroom already allows Otter or Teams transcription for internal standups, use that for the standup.
Do not send a bot into a source's Zoom unless the source agreed, and do not treat a standup recap as the interview transcript. Bot risk: privacy risks of AI meeting bots.
4. Descript when the package is cut as text
Some digital teams cut the interview in Descript and the transcript is a side effect. That is reasonable if the editor already lives there.
The radio desk with a WAV and a script deadline does not need a video editor. File in, text out.
Archive search is a filing problem
A transcript nobody can find is a one-off. For a small digital team:
- One file name pattern: `2026-10-07_city-hall_mayor`
- Upload the best audio, not the mixed program with music under the whole piece
- Export TXT into the same folder as the media
- Keep speaker names consistent ("Mayor Diaz", not "Speaker 2" in the archive)
A media asset manager with its own speech pipeline can be the right system at station scale. Until you have that, a folder plus a transcript beats another SaaS login nobody opens.
Documentary-scale libraries, adjacent problem: how to search video libraries with transcripts.
Music beds will wreck the draft
News packages put music under opens and tags. ASR will try to caption the song or drop the voice. Transcribe the clean interview stem when you have it. If you only have the mixed master, expect garbage under the music and check those regions by ear.
FAQ
What transcription should a newsroom use in 2026?
For recorded interviews and digital packages, start with File Transcribe and a human listen on every quote you publish. For live TV captions, use your existing broadcast caption vendor.
Is AI transcription legal to air?
That is a station policy and a caption-regulation question, not a feature checkbox. Many stations allow AI as a draft for digital and still require a caption vendor for linear TV.
Can I transcribe a package that already has a music bed?
You can, and the music sections will be bad. Prefer the clean interview audio.
Do I need a meeting recorder for news?
Only for internal meetings. Stories come from files and feeds. Recorders that join calls are the wrong default for source interviews.
How should producers store the transcript?
Next to the media, with a date and slug in the file name, and with real speaker names on anyone you might quote again.
Transcribe the interview, not the rundown
Upload the cleanest recording on File Transcribe. Pull quotes from timestamps you have played back. Leave live captioning to the workflow your engineer already trusts.
