Downloading a Google Meet recording means getting the MP4 onto your computer. This page is only for when that has not happened. If the video already plays locally, stop.
The ordinary clicks, Drive, then Meet Recordings, then Download, are in how do I download a Google Meet recording for transcription. Use that once you can see the video. What to do with the words afterward is Google Meet transcript vs uploading the file. This post does not transcribe anything.
Direct answer
- Separate the video from Gemini meeting notes. A Doc is not an MP4.
- Find which Drive holds the recording. Yours may be empty.
- Wait if the file still says processing. Do not save a broken download.
- If you were not the organizer, ask for the video with download permission.
- If Download is missing, that is an admin or sharing block. Ask. Do not bypass it.
- Play the file once. When the duration looks like the meeting, you are done.
You were not the organizer
Meet stores the recording in the organizer's Google Drive, usually in a folder named Meet Recordings. Your Drive can be empty after a full hour on the call. The calendar invite does not copy the MP4 to guests.
Ask the organizer for the video, not "the notes." They need to share the recording so you can download it. A view-only link opens a browser player and still leaves nothing on disk.
If the organizer has left, an admin has to send the file. If nobody with recording rights pressed Record, there is no MP4. Sharing settings will not create one.
The email never arrived
Meet mails a link when processing finishes, usually to the organizer. Invitees sometimes get it. The mail is a pointer. The file lives in Drive.
Check the Google account you joined with, including spam. Work and personal inboxes are separate. Then ask the organizer to search Drive for the meeting title.
No mail and no file means recording never started, the file is still processing, or it landed somewhere you cannot see.
Gemini meeting notes are not the video
Gemini can drop meeting notes into Drive as a Google Doc: a recap, a topic list, or something closer to a transcript. Opening it does not download video.
Look at the icon. A Doc is text. The recording is a video, almost always an MP4, often titled with the meeting name and the date. If you only see the Doc, the video was never saved, is still processing, or sits on an account you cannot open.
Do not download the Doc and rename it to .mp4. It will not play. The notes can be useful later. They are not the recording.
The file still says processing
Drive can list the meeting before the video is finished. The row says processing, the preview spins, or the download is a few kilobytes and will not open.
Wait. A long call takes longer than a short check-in. Refreshing the tab does not finish the encode. Download again later and play it locally. A finished file has a normal video size and a duration close to the meeting.
If it is still processing the next day, ask whether Record stopped cleanly. A host who closed the laptop mid-call can leave a file that never completes. The Download menu will not repair that.
The recording is on a shared drive
Some admins send Meet recordings to a shared drive instead of the organizer's My Drive. Meet Recordings may be a folder on that shared drive. It will not appear under your personal My Drive.
Search for the meeting title while signed in as the account that joined. Then open Shared drives you belong to. If you are not a member, search hides the file. The organizer, or the shared drive manager, has to add you or hand you the MP4. A Meet recents row is not a file you can save.
An admin blocked downloads
You can open the video in the browser. Download is missing, greyed out, or Drive says the organization does not allow it. That setting is on the file or the domain. Meet will not override it from call history.
Do not use a hidden media address, a print trick, or a screen capture of the player. Ask the owner or a Workspace admin for a copy, or for download rights on that file.
If they say no, you do not have an MP4. A notes Doc may be all you can see. This page ends there.
How you know the MP4 is on disk
It opens in a player. The duration is about the length of the meeting, not a few seconds. The extension is .mp4. A separate audio file is optional. The video is the recording.
If several meetings share one title, add the date to the filename.
Then stop. Speaker labels, SRT, and VTT are a different job. If the file plays and you still need to choose between Meet's Doc and an upload, read Google Meet transcript vs uploading the file. If you were never stuck, the short path is how do I download a Google Meet recording for transcription. After you have decided to transcribe, the upload page is transcribe Google Meet. File Transcribe does not join the meeting, and it does not fetch the file from Drive.
What this will not do
- It will not start a recording nobody started.
- It will not take a file from the organizer's Drive without a share.
- It will not turn Gemini notes into video.
- It will not label speakers or export captions.
FAQ
How do I download a Google Meet recording if I was not the organizer?
Ask the organizer to share the video with download permission. Your Meet Recordings folder and the calendar invite do not hold their MP4.
Why did I get Gemini notes but no video?
Notes and the recording are different Drive objects. A Doc can appear while the MP4 is still processing, stored on another account, or was never recorded.
Should I download a recording that still says processing?
No. Wait until a local player opens it and the duration matches the meeting. A processing download is often empty or broken.
Download is blocked by an admin. What now?
Ask the owner or the admin for a copy or for permission. No Meet control beats a Drive block. If they refuse, you do not have the recording.
The MP4 plays on your computer, so this page is finished. If the next question is whether Meet's transcript Doc is enough, use Google Meet transcript vs uploading the file. If you upload later, confirm the minute allowance on pricing before you queue a long backlog.
